Film & Flexible Packaging

Application Overview — Flexible packaging structures are designed around sealing, toughness, stiffness, optical appearance, barrier performance and converting efficiency. Many demanding packages use coextruded or laminated structures in which each layer performs a different function, so material selection begins with the format, filling process, product-protection requirements and converting equipment.
Typical Products — • Food and beverage pouches, bags and overwrap • Lamination and sealant films • Shrink film and collation film • Stretch film, pallet wrap and industrial film • Heavy-duty sacks, liners and refuse bags • Produce, frozen-food and hygiene packaging
Key Performance Requirements — • Seal initiation temperature, hot tack and seal integrity • Dart impact, puncture, tear and tensile performance • Stiffness, web handling and machinability • Clarity, haze, gloss and print appearance • Oxygen, aroma, grease or moisture barrier where required • Slip, antiblock, coefficient-of-friction and down-gauging capability
Material Selection Guide — • LDPE: general packaging, lamination, shrink film and sealant layers. Select melt index and density for the extrusion line, thickness, clarity and stiffness. • LLDPE: bags, liners, stretch film and tough sealant layers. Comonomer type, molecular design and blend level affect toughness, optics and processing. • Metallocene LLDPE: high-performance sealant layers and downgauged structures. Confirm the seal window, blocking behaviour and line-processing requirements. • HDPE film grades: thin-gauge bags, produce bags and high-stiffness film. Film-grade molecular design and bubble stability are critical; blow-molding or pipe HDPE is not interchangeable. • PP cast-film grades: CPP packaging, lamination and heat-resistant seal layers. Homopolymer, random copolymer and impact copolymer serve different optical, sealing and toughness needs. • PP orientation grades: BOPP packaging, labels and overwrap. Orientation grade, additive package and line conditions are application-specific. • PET / PA / barrier polymers: printed laminates, retort, puncture-resistant and barrier structures. Define the complete layer structure, adhesion and recycling strategy first.

Selection Notes — • State whether the film is monolayer, coextruded or laminated and the function of each layer. • Provide thickness, die type, blow-up ratio, output rate, winding, printing, lamination and bag-making conditions. • Final validation requires seal, drop, transport, shelf-life and migration testing on the finished package with the actual packed product.
