Application Overview — Blow molding is used to produce hollow plastic products ranging from small pharmaceutical and personal-care bottles to household chemical containers, jerry cans and industrial drums. Resin selection depends on the molding route, container size, wall distribution, stiffness, impact resistance, environmental stress-crack resistance, barrier requirements and the product being packed.
Typical Products — • Water, milk, juice and beverage bottles • Detergent, bleach and household-cleaner bottles • Shampoo, cosmetic and personal-care packaging • Pharmaceutical and healthcare bottles • Jerry cans, drums and intermediate bulk-container components • Squeeze bottles and technical containers
Key Performance Requirements — • Melt strength and parison stability for consistent wall distribution • Stiffness, top-load and drop-impact performance • Environmental stress-crack and chemical resistance • Barrier, shelf-life, closure compatibility and leak performance • Surface appearance, colour and printability • Food-contact, pharmaceutical or dangerous-goods compliance where applicable
Material Selection Guide — • HDPE blow-molding grades: milk and water containers, detergent and chemical bottles, jerry cans and drums. Select density, melt strength and ESCR for the container size and contents. Industrial and dangerous-goods packaging requires application-specific validation. • LDPE / LLDPE: squeeze bottles and flexible dispensing containers requiring toughness and squeeze recovery. Check stiffness, seal performance and chemical compatibility. • PP blow-molding grades: food and pharmaceutical containers and parts requiring higher heat resistance. Confirm whether extrusion blow molding, injection blow molding or stretch blow molding is intended. • PET bottle resin: water, carbonated beverage, edible-oil, food and personal-care bottles. Intrinsic viscosity, acetaldehyde, reheat behaviour and heat-set capability are grade-specific.

Selection Notes — • Identify the molding route, machine type, head or preform system, container volume and production target. • Evaluate the actual packed product; aggressive contents may require enhanced ESCR or a multilayer barrier structure. • Control weight and wall distribution through resin, parison or preform design, mould cooling and top-load validation. • Final approval must be based on the manufacturer’s current TDS, regulatory documents and testing of the finished container with its closure and contents.
