Sheets & Thermoforming

Application Overview — Extruded sheet is converted into packaging, appliance, transport and industrial parts by thermoforming, fabrication or lamination. Material selection depends on sheet-gauge control, melt strength, heating window, draw ratio, impact, stiffness, clarity, surface finish and the temperature and chemicals encountered by the finished part.
Typical Products — • Food trays, cups, lids and clamshells • Blister and display packaging • Refrigerator liners and appliance panels • Luggage shells and transport-interior components • Protective trays, pallets and industrial sheet products • Signage, interior panels and fabricated technical parts
Key Performance Requirements — • Stable sheet extrusion and thickness control • Thermoforming window and uniform draw-down • Melt strength and sag resistance • Impact, stiffness and dimensional stability • Clarity, gloss, colour and surface quality • Trim, welding, bonding, heat, cold and chemical performance
Material Selection Guide — • PP sheet grade: food trays, cups, lids and heat-resistant packaging. Thermoforming grades require suitable melt strength and heating control; clarity and impact depend on PP type. • APET / PET sheet grade: clear trays, clamshells, blisters and display packaging. Moisture control, crystallisation and temperature profile are important; specialised structures are needed for higher-temperature use. • GPPS / HIPS sheet grade: clear display packs, dairy cups, disposable trays and refrigerator liners. GPPS favours clarity and stiffness; HIPS improves impact and formability. • ABS sheet grade: luggage shells, appliance liners, sanitary and transport-interior panels. Select extrusion grades with appropriate impact, heat and colour performance; outdoor use normally needs weather-resistant modification or a cap layer. • Rigid PVC sheet grade: blisters, cards, panels and specialised formed products. Stabiliser system, compliance, heat history and end-of-life requirements must be reviewed for the target market.

Selection Notes — • Provide sheet width and thickness, extrusion configuration, formed-part depth, draw ratio, heating method, cycle target and trimming method. • For multilayer sheet, define each layer and its function. • Final selection requires forming trials and testing of the finished part under actual service conditions.
