Wire & Cable

Application Overview — Polymer compounds in wire and cable systems provide electrical insulation, mechanical protection, flame performance and environmental durability. Material choice depends on cable type, voltage class, conductor temperature, electrical properties, flame and smoke requirements, installation environment and the standards governing the complete cable.
Typical Products — • Low-, medium- and high-voltage power-cable insulation • Power- and telecom-cable jackets • Copper telephone and coaxial insulation • Fiber-optic cable jackets, tubes and components • Building wire and flexible cable compounds • Cable conduit and protective duct
Key Performance Requirements — • Dielectric strength and low electrical loss • Thermal ageing and conductor-temperature rating • Environmental stress-crack and moisture resistance • Abrasion, impact, flexibility and installation durability • Flame retardancy, smoke and halogen requirements where specified • Extrusion stability, surface finish, dimensional control and UV performance
Material Selection Guide — • Crosslinkable PE / XLPE compound: power-cable insulation. Voltage class, cleanliness, scorch control, curing system and cable standard are compound-specific; general PE resin is not a substitute. • LDPE / LLDPE cable compound: communication-wire insulation and selected jackets. Use dedicated grades with the required stabilisation, cleanliness and ESCR. • HDPE cable grade: telecom insulation, jackets, conduit and core tubes. Specialised molecular designs may be required for demanding jackets and conduits. • PVC cable compound: building wire, appliance wire, flexible insulation and jackets. Plasticiser, stabiliser, flame, smoke, temperature and regulatory requirements are formulation-specific. • Halogen-free flame-retardant compound: low-smoke, halogen-free building, transport and industrial cables. Mechanical performance and certification must match the cable standard; compliance cannot be inferred from polymer family alone. • PP-based cable materials: selected communication components, fillers and specialised insulation systems. Use only dedicated grades qualified for the construction and processing route.

Selection Notes — • State cable construction, conductor material and size, voltage class, layer thickness, line, service temperature and required standards. • Cable approval is system-level; the exact compound must be supported by current TDS and certification documents. • Final validation requires extrusion trials and testing of the complete cable.
